This diet will help you lose weight and protect your cardiovascular system because you will eat fewer calories and fat. The main part of the Ornish diet is fruit. It also recommends exercise, in most days a week and reducing stress, which is responsible for overeating. During this diet, you will eat cereal, yogurt (fat-free) and orange juice for breakfast, potatoes with cheese and broccoli for lunch, tomatoes, pasta with vegetables for dinner. You can drink water, tea, juices and coffee. This is a sample menu.
The good things about this diet is that you will get the right size of fruits and vegetables, this will be provided at the beginning of a diet, most of the food used is low in sodium, you will increase your health and you will reduce the sugar, alcohol and carbohydrates you consume. But, there are some drawbacks. You cannot use this diet for a long-time, because it is very low in fat, some meal can be extremely low in vitamin B12, iron and calories and because there is no meat, you may feel hungry often!
Using this diet, you cannot achieve daily intake of fat, sometimes you will need more proteins and you will need more vitamin D. But, you can achieve daily intake of carbohydrates and fiber. The potassium (daily need is 4.700mg) which is good for your blood pressure, reducing risk of kidney stones and decrease bone loss, can be above the recommendation. The daily intake of calcium is 1000-1300 mg, so, with this diet, you will reach the limit. Vitamin’s D, daily need is 15mg, but you cannot achieve this goal using this diet. So, seeing this, you will have to use omega 3 and a multivitamin supplement
